Selena Gomez reveals she may never get pregnant due to bipolar medication

Selena Gomez Opens Up About Being Unable to Carry Her Own Children Due to Health Risks

In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Selena Gomez shared a deeply personal revelation: her ongoing medical challenges mean pregnancy would be too risky for her health and the baby’s. The Only Murders in the Building star expressed that she had envisioned having a family by age 35 but had to come to terms with the fact that carrying her own child isn’t an option.

“I haven’t ever said this publicly, but I unfortunately can’t carry my own children,” Gomez, now 32, revealed. “My medical issues would put my life and the baby’s in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while.” Though she didn’t specify the exact cause in the interview, Gomez has been candid about her 2015 lupus diagnosis and her kidney transplant in 2017. Additionally, she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2020, requiring medications that could complicate pregnancy.

Gomez shared that while this journey looks different than she once imagined, she’s grateful for alternative options like adoption or surrogacy. “I thought it would happen the way it happens for everyone, but I’m in a much better place with that now. There are wonderful people willing to help through surrogacy or adoption, which are both huge possibilities for me. At the end of the day, I don’t care—my child will be mine.”

Her boyfriend, music producer Benny Blanco, has openly spoken about wanting children, calling it his “next goal in life.” Gomez, whose mother was adopted, shared that she’s deeply grateful for her family’s path and is excited about the future, even if it doesn’t unfold traditionally.

This vulnerable interview comes as Gomez is busier than ever: her Rare Beauty line has propelled her to billionaire status, she’s up for a best actress Emmy nomination, and she’s gaining acclaim for her role in Emilia Perez, set to hit Netflix soon. Yet, despite her thriving career, Gomez emphasizes that family is at the heart of her plans.
