Steven Cheung, Trump’s communications director, issued the statement minutes after the event, assuring the public that while gunshots were heard “in his vicinity,” no further details were immediately available.
Reports from Politico’s Meridith McGraw indicated that multiple gunshots were fired at the golf club, where Trump was playing at the time. As a precaution, the U.S. Secret Service, working alongside the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, rushed the former president to safety.
In a statement, Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi confirmed the incident, stating, “The U.S. Secret Service, in conjunction with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, is investigating a protective incident involving former President Donald Trump that occurred shortly before 2 p.m.” He also reiterated that Trump was unharmed.
This marks the second shooting scare for Trump in just a few months. In July, a sniper targeted the former president during a rally in Pennsylvania, leading to two deaths and an injury to Trump’s ear. That incident resulted in the resignation of Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle.
Though the motive and details of today’s incident remain unclear, officials have stated that there is no evidence to suggest Trump was directly targeted this time. Local law enforcement is continuing to investigate.
In a show of support, Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) took to social media, stating that Trump was in good spirits following the incident and “more resolved than ever to save our country.” The White House also responded, confirming that President Biden and Vice President Harris were briefed and relieved to hear Trump was safe.
