What happened to Saga on ‘Deadliest Catch?’

Among the many dangerous job reality TV shows, Deadliest Catch stands out as one of the originals. This Discovery Channel favorite follows the lives of men who risk everything to catch crabs in the Bering Sea off the coast of Alaska. It’s a high-stakes job with significant financial rewards.

Fans of the show know that Captain Jake Anderson took over the F/V Saga from Captain Elliott Neese, but the ship hasn’t been as active as it once was. Read on to discover what happened to it.

The Saga has certainly had its ups and downs over the years. In the early episodes of Season 17, the Saga was nowhere to be seen. Many speculated it had finally sunk, but it reappeared in the episode “Restricted Zone,” though its whereabouts during the absence remained a mystery.

The ship is old, over 42 years old to be exact, and has required significant upkeep to stay operational. It has also narrowly avoided disaster multiple times. In the Season 16 episode “Rogue Wave Juggernaut,” the ship’s rudder failed in rough waters, forcing the crew to repair it to avoid losing the vessel.

As we approach Season 20, curiosity about the Saga’s fate has intensified. In a recent recap episode before the premiere, Jake mentioned losing the Saga due to something “squirrely” his partner did.

The prevailing theory is that his partner, Lenny Herzog, had tax issues that led to the boat being repossessed. Some related theories on a Reddit thread speculating the Saga’s fate include:

If the government enforced the lien, they could seize and sell the entire boat, giving Jake his share only after all other liens are settled. More likely, they were unable to borrow money to keep the boat running because of the lien and either sold it to pay off debts or lost it to the lender.”

Another theory suggests “a judgment against him shut down the LLC’s ability to borrow money, meaning no cash to buy supplies, fuel, make repairs, pay loans, or get insurance.”

Whatever the case, it’s uncertain if the issue will be addressed in the premiere. However, there’s a chance we might get answers.

The 20th season of Deadliest Catch premieres on June 11 on Discovery.
