The incident occurred on May 21, 2023, during a match at Valencia’s Mestalla stadium. Fans were heard making monkey noises and racist gestures towards the Brazilian forward, leading to a temporary halt in the game. Vinicius stood his ground, pointing out the offenders, which prompted stadium officials to intervene.

The Valencia court convicted the defendants of an offense against moral integrity with the aggravating factor of racially motivated discrimination. They were also banned from attending matches for two years. Due to their lack of previous criminal records, the jail sentences were suspended.

La Liga president Javier Tebas praised the ruling, stating, “This sentence is very good news for the fight against racism in Spain. It sends a clear message that La Liga will find and prosecute those who hurl insults, and they will face criminal consequences.”

Real Madrid also issued a statement, revealing that the convicted fans had admitted their wrongdoing and apologized to Vinicius, the club, and everyone affected by their behavior.

The incident has highlighted the ongoing issue of racism in football, sparking international outrage and leading to a diplomatic protest from Brazil. Despite the abuse, Vinicius continues to be a key player for Real Madrid, showing resilience in the face of adversity.

This case underscores the importance of addressing and combating racism in sports, with hopes that this ruling will serve as a deterrent for future incidents.
