Nigeria's Most Streamed Amapiano Songs and Artists Over the Last Decade

To celebrate a decade of Amapiano, one of the biggest genre exports out of Africa, Spotify has revealed the most streamed songs and artists in Nigeria under the genre.

In 2023, the South African dance genre Amapiano hit over 1.4 billion streams on Spotify. The genre’s influence on South Africa’s music culture has led to a global Amapiano frenzy, inspiring dance challenges, collaborations, and fusions.

Originating from South African townships to global stages, “A Decade of Amapiano” tracks the genre’s rise, showcasing its journey and highlighting key artists. Phiona Okumu, Spotify’s Head of Music in Sub-Saharan Africa, stated, “One of the most affirming parts of watching Amapiano explode over the past decade is seeing how people use it for self-expression.”

The love and excitement for the music style also showed its popularity in Nigeria, with a 181% surge in listenership between 2023 and 2024. This popularity led Spotify to launch “A Decade of Amapiano,” a site exploring the genre’s origins, sounds, and future.

The COVID-19 pandemic was a game-changing year for Amapiano’s growth on Spotify. In 2020, the genre achieved its first 100 million streams, followed by an impressive 300 million streams in 2021, further solidifying its rising popularity.
