FIFA, the international governing body of football, has declined a proposal to introduce a Blue card in football matches for players who exhibit cynical behavior or disrespect towards match officials.

The organization has labeled the suggestion as misguided and premature. Nonetheless, FIFA has suggested that the Blue Card could be tested at the grassroots level of football. This recommendation comes as a significant development since the inception of the traditional yellow and red cards introduced at the 1970 World Cup, marking the potential introduction of a new disciplinary measure in the sport.

FIFA’s official statement clarified, “Contrary to reports, the introduction of a so-called ‘blue card’ at the top tiers of football is misguided and premature. If any trials are to be conducted, they should be cautiously implemented at the grassroots level, a stance FIFA plans to emphasize during the discussion of this topic at the IFAB AGM scheduled for March 2.”

The Blue card is designed to penalize players who dissent or deliberately thwart promising attacks, temporarily removing them from the game for a duration of 10 minutes.
