Woman's Eerie Encounter with 'Night Marcher Demon' in Haunted Hawaiian Forest

In a chilling experience that seems straight out of a supernatural thriller, Kay Borleis, a senior art director and avid runner, encountered what may have been a ghostly apparition of an ancient Hawaiian warrior, known as a Night Marcher, during a trail run in Honolulu, Oahu. The unsettling incident occurred in January 2019, while Borleis was participating in the Hawaiian Ultra Running Team’s Trail 100-Mile Endurance Run (HURT 100), a grueling race through the rainforests of Oahu.

During her fourth lap, accompanied by her friend Cassie, a photograph captured a mysterious, dark figure moving past Borleis. The figure, which appeared in a live photo sent by Cassie to her family, was dressed in what seemed like a cloak. Neither Borleis nor Cassie recalled seeing anyone on that trail stretch, sparking intrigue and fear about the figure’s identity.

This spectral figure is believed to be a Night Marcher, a ghost of an ancient Hawaiian warrior. Night Marchers are traditionally regarded as sacred protectors, invisible to the common man, with dire consequences for those who dare to gaze upon them. This legend was brought to Borleis’s attention after the race, as she and Cassie sought to unravel the mystery of the photograph.

Adding to the eeriness of the encounter, Borleis, who had been running since the age of 14 and never dropped out of a race, experienced a sudden, intense pain in her foot during the same lap, forcing her to withdraw from the event. This unusual occurrence, coupled with the sighting of the supposed Night Marcher, left Borleis and her friend deeply unsettled.

According to local beliefs and folklore, as reported by Honolulu Magazine, Night Marchers are the spirits of these ancient Hawaiian warriors. In life, they traveled at night to protect highly sacred individuals, and encountering them was considered a bad omen or even fatal. The magazine notes that lying prostrate on the ground could be seen as a sign of respect and might spare an individual from the wrath of these ghostly warriors.

Borleis reflected on her fortunate lack of direct encounter with the Night Marcher, a testament to the rich and mysterious cultural heritage of Hawaii and its enduring presence in contemporary times. The experience serves as a haunting reminder of the island’s deep-rooted legends and the thin veil between our world and the supernatural.
