Pope Francis has strongly condemned surrogate motherhood, calling it a “despicable” practice and urging a global ban due to its commercial nature. In his foreign policy address to diplomats at the Holy See, the Pope emphasized the injustice and exploitation inherent in surrogacy, highlighting how it treats both women and unborn children as commodities.

The Pope’s comments come as part of his annual speech, where he traditionally discusses global conflicts and injustices. He stressed that an unborn child should not be “turned into an object of trafficking” and criticized the practice for exploiting women’s material needs. “A child should never be the basis of a commercial contract,” he stated, advocating for a universal prohibition on surrogacy.
Pope Francis, who has previously referred to surrogacy as “uterus for rent,” aligns his views with some European countries like Spain and Italy, where surrogacy is already prohibited. However, despite the Catholic Church’s opposition to surrogacy, the Vatican’s doctrine office on church teaching has clarified that children born to homosexual parents via surrogacy can still be baptized. This statement follows the office’s recent approval, endorsed by Pope Francis, to allow the blessing of same-sex couples.
