Amalija Knavs, the mother of former First Lady Melania Trump, has passed away at the age of 78. The news was confirmed by Melania Trump in a statement on Tuesday, expressing her deep sorrow over the loss of her beloved mother.

Melania Trump was notably absent from a Trump family Christmas photo this year, which featured former President Donald Trump and three of his five children. It was revealed that her absence was due to her being at her mother’s bedside in the hospital during her final moments.
In her statement, Melania Trump described her mother as a strong and graceful woman who was devoted to her family. “Amalija Knavs was a strong woman who always carried herself with grace, warmth, and dignity. She was entirely devoted to her husband, daughters, grandson, and son-in-law. We will miss her beyond measure and continue to honor and love her legacy,” she said.
The cause of death was not disclosed in the statement.
Amalija Knavs and her husband, Viktor Knavs, aged 79, had been living with Melania and the former president at Mar-a-Lago in recent years. Amalija shared a close bond with her daughter Melania and grandson Barron. A source close to the family shared with PEOPLE that Amalija had an excellent relationship with Melania and Barron, saying, “They love her. She is unselfish and takes care of the family. Melania has always been super good with her mom as well as Barron.”
The source also noted that Barron, in particular, was very close to his grandmother and spent considerable time with her.
