D'banj Cleared of Rape and Fraud Allegations by Nigerian Police and ICPC

Nigerian music icon Dapo Oyebanjo, popularly known as D’banj, has been officially cleared of rape and fraud allegations by the Nigeria Police Force and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

In a recent development reported by Punch, both the Nigeria Police Force and the ICPC issued separate reports, dismissing the accusations against the singer after extensive investigations. The clearance was confirmed through an affidavit by Toheeb Lawal, a lawyer at Law Corridor in Abuja, presenting the investigative findings of both agencies to the District Court of Abuja.

Back in 2020, D’banj was accused of rape, leading to an investigation initiated by the Inspector General of Police. The police report, dated November 14, 2023, concluded there was no substantial evidence to support the rape claim, citing statements from the complainant, witnesses, suspects, and staff of Glee Hotel Lagos. The hotel management also refuted the allegations, noting the absence of records supporting the complainant’s claims.

Moreover, the complainant voluntarily withdrew her petition in July 2020, as per a letter from her legal representatives, Ojoge, Omileye & Partners, effectively halting further investigation.

In a separate case in 2022, D’banj faced accusations from the ICPC regarding the alleged diversion of funds from the N-Power Programme. However, a document dated November 29, 2023, from the ICPC clarified that there was no prima facie case of fraud against D’banj. His legal counsel emphasized that the singer was neither a government official nor had any access to government funds, and his involvement in the N-Power campaign was purely voluntary and uncompensated.

With these official clearances, D’banj has overcome the legal hurdles, reaffirming his innocence in the face of these allegations.
