During his defense in an Atlanta courtroom on Tuesday, Steel emphasized that Young Thug, whose real name is Jeffery Williams, sought to redefine what it means to be a thug. “Most people think about a thug as a criminal, but to Jeffery, ‘thug’ had a different meaning,” Steel explained.
Further elaborating on Young Thug’s vision, Steel mentioned the artist’s aspirations to lift his community from poverty and despair. By achieving this goal, Young Thug believed he would embody being “Truly Humble Under God.”
This statement aligns with a broader narrative that Steel is constructing in defense of Young Thug. He also referenced Tupac Shakur’s famous “Thug Life” acronym, which was used to denounce hate.
In a twist on another controversial aspect, Steel addressed Young Thug’s association with the Young Slime Life gang and his record label, Young Stoner Life. Contrary to the allegations, Steel argued that YSL was a reference to the French fashion brand Yves Saint Laurent, noting the tight-fitting pants often worn by the group bearing the YSL logo.
Additionally, Steel sought to redefine “pushing P,” a phrase from Young Thug’s song, as “pushing positivity.” This counters the prosecution’s claim that Young Thug was promoting gang culture. According to Steel, the rapper was instead encouraging positivity even in challenging circumstances.
Prosecutors have charged Young Thug and 27 associates with a range of offenses under Georgia’s RICO act, alleging their involvement in racketeering, murder, and other serious crimes. They argue that Young Thug is central to the Young Slime Life gang’s operations.
