In a recent development that has piqued public interest, Tanzanian headteachers who faced suspension for the playing of Zuchu’s popular song ‘Honey‘ in a school have been ordered to be reinstated. The directive came from the Speaker of the National Assembly of Tanzania, Dr. Tulia Ackson, who took a stand on the matter on Monday, November 6, 2023.

The controversy began when a video emerged showing students dancing to Zuchu’s ‘Honey‘ at Tunduru Primary School. Critics argued that the lyrics were unsuitable for the school environment. This led to the suspension of the headteachers by the Minister of Education, Professor Adolf Mkenda, on November 2, 2023.
MP Husna Sekiboko raised concerns over the incident, emphasizing the need for clarity on appropriate music in educational and religious settings to maintain Tanzanian cultural values. In response, Minister Mkenda asserted the government’s commitment to preserving moral standards in schools.
However, in a twist, it was revealed that the suspended headteachers were not present during the incident. Addressing this point, Speaker Dr. Tulia Ackson highlighted the necessity of due process and the right to be heard. He expressed that suspensions should not be made without giving the individuals in question a chance to explain themselves.
With this perspective, Dr. Ackson instructed that the headteachers be reinstated and allowed to present their side. He emphasized the distinction between religious beliefs and Tanzanian cultural norms, calling for the preservation of societal values.
