In an upcoming episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, set to air on Tuesday, Pinkett Smith opened up while discussing her new memoir, “Worthy.” Show host Drew Barrymore touched upon the couple’s past separation, to which Pinkett Smith responded with affirmations of their enduring bond.
“We’re staying together forever. I tried. We tried,” Pinkett Smith expressed in a preview clip released by Entertainment Weekly.
The revelation comes after Pinkett Smith’s October announcement that she and Smith had been living separately since 2016. Married since 1997 and parents to two children, the couple has faced their share of challenges. In a Today show interview with Hoda Kotb, Pinkett Smith acknowledged their hardships but dismissed any plans for legal divorce.
“I think by the time we got to 2016, we were just exhausted with trying,” she revealed.
A turning point for Pinkett Smith came during the 2022 Academy Awards incident, where Smith famously slapped comedian Chris Rock. Reflecting on that moment at a New York City book event, she said, “I was like, ‘I’m riding with you. I didn’t come into this place as your wife, but I’m leaving here as your wife because we got a storm we’re gonna have to deal with together. I am NOT going to leave your side.'”
Pinkett Smith’s commitment was further echoed by Smith himself at a Baltimore book tour event, where he described their relationship as “brutiful” – a combination of brutal and beautiful. He affirmed, “Jada is the best friend I have ever had on this planet and I am going to show up for her and support her for the rest of my life.”
