Frances Sternhagen, the beloved Tony-winning actress renowned for her role on HBO’s “Sex and the City,” has passed away at the age of 93. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Sternhagen died of natural causes on Monday, Nov. 27. Her family released a statement, expressing their continued inspiration from her love and life.

Sternhagen’s most notable role was as Bunny MacDougal in “Sex and the City,” where she played the snobbish mother-in-law to Charlotte York, a character portrayed by Kristin Davis. Her performance in this role was one among her many memorable appearances on television.
She also earned acclaim as Esther Calvin, Cliff Clavin’s mother in the hit series “Cheers,” a role that brought her two Emmy Award nominations.
Beyond her television success, Sternhagen had a prolific stage career, making her Broadway debut in 1955. She graced numerous on and off-Broadway productions, receiving seven Tony nominations throughout her career and winning two for her performances in “The Good Doctor” and “The Heiress.”
Sternhagen is survived by her six children with her late husband Thomas Carlin, alongside nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
John Carlin, Sternhagen’s son, paid tribute to his mother on social media. He expressed gratitude for the “remarkable gift of an artist and human being” that was his mother, Frances Sternhagen. He reminisced about her as his mom, friend, and song and dance partner. In his touching Instagram post, he reflected on their final conversation, filled with mutual expressions of love and missing each other.
