Davido Challenges Amaju Pinnick’s N2.3 Billion Lawsuit with Preliminary Objection

Afrobeats star David Adeleke, better known as Davido, has taken a significant legal step against the N2.3 billion lawsuit filed by Brownhill Investments Company Limited and its Chairman, Amaju Pinnick. The lawsuit, lodged in the High Court of Delta State, Effurun, accuses Davido and his music label, Davido Music Worldwide Limited, of breaching a performance agreement.

The suit stems from an alleged failure by Davido to perform at the 19th edition of the “Warri Again” event on October 6, 2023, despite receiving a payment of US$94,500 (about N70 million). According to Pinnick, this breach of agreement led to additional costs, including $18,000 spent on a chartered private jet for Davido and his team.

In the latest court session, as reported by “ThisDay,” Davido’s legal team presented a preliminary objection, challenging the jurisdiction of the court. They argued that the case should be seen as debt recovery and that a letter of demand should have been issued before taking legal action. Moreover, Davido contended that music executive Sosoberokon, alleged to have negotiated the performance contract, does not represent him.

Davido acknowledged the receipt of $94,500 but clarified that this payment was solely for promoting the show and not for any performance.

In a separate but related case of criminal defamation, Davido’s team, led by Norrison Quakers (SAN), also filed an objection questioning the court’s jurisdiction. They pointed out that the defamatory statements were published online, but there was no proof that they were downloaded and viewed in Delta State, which is necessary for the court’s jurisdiction.

Both cases have been adjourned to December 14, 2023, for a ruling on the preliminary objections. In another related N500 million defamation lawsuit against Israel, a member of Davido’s staff, no defence has been filed on behalf of Israel. The court has issued an injunction preventing Israel from making further defamatory statements against Pinnick.

As the legal battles unfold, fans and observers await the court’s decision in these high-profile cases involving one of Afrobeats’ biggest stars.
