Dina Marie Ruiz was born in Castro Valley, California. Her father, Michael Ruiz, was a math teacher at Mission San Jose High School and a wrestling coach. Michael had an interesting background, having been adopted by a Spanish/Puerto Rican couple as an infant in Honolulu’s Kalihi neighborhood.

His biological mother, Lilian, had Hawaiian and Japanese roots, while his biological father, Marcus Grant, was of African-American and Native Hawaiian descent.
