History
The history of NMB Bank traces back to the reorganization of the old National Bank of Commerce in 1997. Through an act of Parliament, three new entities emerged: NBC Holdings Limited, National Bank of Tanzania (1997), and National Microfinance Bank. At its inception, NMB Bank primarily focused on savings accounts and had limited lending capabilities.
In 2005, NMB Bank underwent privatization. The Government of Tanzania, which was the sole owner until then, divested 49% of the bank’s shareholding to Rabobank, a financial institution from the Netherlands. This partnership marked a significant milestone for NMB Bank.
Subsequently, the Tanzanian Government continued its divestiture process, reducing its ownership stake. Additionally, the bank’s stock was listed on the stock exchange, resulting in a more diversified ownership structure. Further details regarding the current ownership structure can be found under the “Ownership” section.
