On September 13, 1974, Clarence Thomas was granted admission to the Missouri Bar. From 1974 to 1977, he served as Missouri’s assistant attorney general under John Danforth, a Yale alumnus who held the position of state attorney general. Among Danforth’s team, Thomas stood as the sole African-American member. Initially, Thomas worked in the Criminal Appeals Division of Danforth’s office and later transitioned to the Department of Revenue and Taxation.

Reflecting on his career, Thomas has expressed that his role as assistant attorney general was the most fulfilling job he ever held. In 1976, when John Danforth was elected to the United States Senate, Thomas departed from his position to become an attorney at the Monsanto Chemical Company in St. Louis.

Later, on May 1, 1981, President Ronald Reagan nominated Clarence Thomas as the Assistant Secretary of Education for the Office of Civil Rights within the U.S. Department of Education. From 1982 to 1990, Thomas chaired the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).
