After going missing in January after ascending Mount Baldy in Southern California on foot, actor Julian Sands is still unaccounted for.
Sands, 65, left to hike a mountain near San Bernardino County on January 13 and was first reported missing by his wife Eugenia Citkowitz.
More than two months after going missing, the actor’s whereabouts are still unknown, and searches have been hampered recently by a lot of bad weather in the area.
International media attention has been drawn to the actor’s disappearance as friends and relatives, including John Malkovich, have spoken out about their friendship with Sands.
According to Corporal Nathan Campos of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, Sands was initially reported missing “about 7:30 p.m. on Friday, January 13” in the vicinity of Mount Baldy.
One day into the search, the initial search teams were forced to abandon the area owing to bad weather, a situation that lasted for the last two months of searching for the English actor.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department warned in a news release posted on Facebook in the days following Sands’ disappearance that the weather on the mountain was “adverse and exceedingly dangerous” due to high winds, severe storms across the state, and numerous hiker deaths on the mountain.
The Sands family sent a statement on Jan. 23 that was included with the department’s update and thanked the “heroic search teams” who continue to assist in the hunt for the missing actor.
Nick Sands, the actor’s brother, stated to the U.K.’s Craven Herald & Pioneer on January 24 that he thought Julian was “gone,” despite the fact that they were supposed to meet up for a family gathering on January 30.
He previously told the outlet, “He has not yet been proclaimed missing, considered dead, but I know in my heart that he has gone. But, given the nature of sibling rivalry, it would be just like him to leave and disprove my claim.
When Julian was in Los Angeles, Nick stated to the Craven Herald & Pioneer that the area around Mt. Baldy “was [Julian’s] favorite destination.” Prior to his disappearance, the actor was a frequent hiker, according to Nick.

According to Deadline, the actor told reporters, “I’m a godfather to his first son from his first marriage to Sarah, who I know very well. We became friends after I introduced him to his second wife in 1993 when we first met on the set of The Killing Fields.
