Background
The introduction of the Savita Bhabhi character in 2008 (March 29) sparked controversy in India due to the conservative values prevalent in the society. Some critics viewed the character as emblematic of India’s emerging ultra-liberal segment.
In May 2013, a Savita Bhabhi film was released that humorously addressed the issue of internet censorship, with the character of Savita Bhabhi as the protagonist who saves the day.
Recognition
As per BuzzFeed India, Savita Bhabhi’s popularity can be attributed to the following reasons:
- She represents an Indian woman who unabashedly seeks pleasure, which goes against the societal norms that shame women for pursuing sexual satisfaction.
- The character embodies the traditional archetype of an Indian bhabhi, but also subverts these stereotypes by giving in to her sexual desires.
- Despite being depicted as belonging to the upper class, Savita Bhabhi engages in sexual relationships with individuals from various backgrounds, regardless of their caste, class, or gender.
Controversies
The production of pornography is largely illegal in India, which resulted in the original Savita Bhabhi website being censored by the Indian government under its anti-pornography laws. This move was met with disapproval from individuals such as Indian libertarian blogger and journalist Amit Varma. The ban was later criticized by mainstream media columnists as reflecting a “meddlesome, patriarchal mindset” of a “Net Nanny” government, leading to an online movement to save the character from being removed.
Initially, the creators of the website operated under the collective name Indian Porn Empire to remain anonymous. However, in 2009, the creator of the site, Puneet Agarwal, a second-generation Indian living in the UK, revealed his identity in an attempt to challenge the ban. However, he later announced his decision to take down the comic strip due to family pressure, a month later.
The presence of a character resembling Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan also received criticism on Indian television channels.
