SASSA Payment Dates for 2023/2024: In South Africa, the task of disbursing financial aid to those in need falls under the jurisdiction of the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA).

Individuals who receive SASSA assistance can obtain their payments through various outlets, including selected supermarkets such as Pick n Pay, Boxer, USave merchants, Checkers, and Shoprite. Payment options include utilizing a SASSA card, receiving funds through CashSend, or having the amount directly deposited into their bank account.

SASSA Payment Dates

For those who are receiving SASSA grants, or know someone who is, it may be helpful to know the dates on which payments will be made. The following is a schedule of SASSA payments for February and March of 2023 (dates for future months have not yet been announced):

April 2023:

  • Older Persons/Pensioners Grant: Tuesday, April 4, 2023
  • Disability Grant: Wednesday, April 5, 2023
  • All other Grants: Thursday, April 6, 2023

May 2023:

  • Older Persons/Pensioners Grant: Wednesday, May 3, 2023
  • Disability Grant: Thursday, May 4, 2023
  • All other Grants: Friday, May 5, 2023

Types of SASSA grants and amounts

SASSA provides various types of grants to support financially disadvantaged individuals in South Africa. The grants available, along with their eligibility criteria and payment amounts, are outlined below:

  1. Social Relief Distress Grant (SRD)

The SRD is designed for South African Citizens, Asylum Seekers, Refugees, and Special Permit Holders aged between 18 and 60 years old, who lack the means to support themselves, do not receive any social grants, are not eligible for UIF payment, and receive no other financial assistance. The amount of this grant is R350 per month.

  1. Child Support Grant

If you are the primary caregiver for a child and are in financial need, you may qualify for the Child Support Grant. You will need to pass a means test to receive this grant, and you will be given R500 per month for each child. If you are a primary caregiver for an orphaned child, you will receive R750 per month for each child (the R500 CSG and a R250 top-up).

  1. Foster Child Grant

If you are caring for a foster child who has been placed in your care by the court due to being orphaned, abandoned, abused, at risk, or neglected, you may qualify for the Foster Child Grant. This grant provides R1 120 per month per child.

  1. Care Dependency Grant

The Care Dependency Grant is available to individuals who provide full-time and special care to children with severe disabilities. This grant covers children from birth until they reach the legal age of 18 and offers R2 080 per month per child.

  1. Disability Grant

The Disability Grant is available to individuals with a physical and/or mental disability that prevents them from working for a continuous period of 6 months or more. Individuals may be offered a temporary disability grant if their ailment lasts between 6-12 months and a permanent grant if it continues for more than a year. The maximum amount of this grant is R2 080 per month. It is important to note that a permanent disability grant does not guarantee lifetime eligibility.

  1. Older Person’s Grant (Pensioners Grant)

This grant is intended for individuals aged 60 years or older who are unable to work and earn a salary. Those aged between 60 and 75 years old will receive R2 080 per month, while those over 75 will receive R2 100 per month. Learn more about the Older Person’s Grant and how to apply here.

  1. Grant-In-Aid

  1. War Veteran’s Grant

Please note:

  • The payment amounts mentioned above are as of April 1, 2023, and are subject to change in April and October every year.
  • Beneficiaries receiving an Older Person’s Grant or Disability Grant will receive payment for all their grants linked to their account first, while other grant recipients will be paid one or two days later.
  • Only qualifying beneficiaries will receive the relevant social payouts each month.
