Gigi Hadid gave birth to her first child, a daughter named Khai Hadid Malik, with ex Zayn Malik in September 2020. Despite their split following an alleged dispute between Zayn and Gigi’s mother, Yolanda Hadid, in October 2021, the former couple remains dedicated to co-parenting Khai.
“They are no longer together, but both of them are good parents,” a Hadid family friend told People after the breakup. “They co-parent, and Yolanda is very protective of Gigi. She wants what’s best for her daughter and grandchild.”
Gigi mostly keeps Khai out of the public eye, occasionally sharing glimpses of her on social media. In January 2023, Gigi shared photos of her beach vacation with Khai on Instagram, captioned “celebrated the new year w a lil r&r 🐚”.
During an interview promoting her new knitwear line, Guest in Residence, on “Sunday Today With Willie Geist” in September 2022, Gigi praised her daughter, calling Khai a “genius” and describing motherhood as “a blessing.” As Khai continues to grow and develop, Gigi says the experience only becomes more enjoyable.

Khai was born on Sept. 19, 2020
Khai was born on September 19, 2020, and a few days later on September 23, Hadid and Malik shared the news of their daughter’s arrival.
” Our baby girl is here, healthy & beautiful,” Malik announced on Twitter, sharing a black-and-white photo of his newborn’s hand holding his thumb.
The same day, Hadid posted a different black-and-white picture on Instagram, showing Malik and their daughter holding hands. “Our girl joined us earth-side this weekend, and she’s already changed our world. So in love🥺💕,” Hadid wrote.
In January 2021, Hadid revealed her daughter’s name by quietly updating her Instagram bio to include “khai’s mom.”
Hadid gave birth at home without any medication.
During an interview for Vogue’s March 2021 issue, Hadid shared that she gave birth to Khai at home to avoid a hospital delivery amid the pandemic. With Malik, her mother Yolanda, sister Bella, a midwife, and her assistant present, Hadid delivered her baby in an inflatable bath set up in her bedroom.
Hadid described feeling like an “animal woman” during the experience and had to “dig deep” to manage the pain.
“I did wonder what it would be like with an epidural and how it would differ,” Hadid admitted. “My midwife told me that I was doing it and nobody could help me. I had passed the epidural stage, so pushing would be the same in a hospital bed.”
Hadid also disclosed that Malik caught Khai when she was born. “I didn’t even realize that she was out,” the model said. “I was so tired, and when I looked up, he was holding her. It was adorable.”

Hadid and Malik have been sharing the responsibility of parenting Khai together.
After an alleged dispute between Malik and Hadid’s mother, Yolanda, during which he reportedly pushed her, the couple ended their relationship officially in October 2021. Despite this, they have committed to co-parenting their daughter.
“They are not currently together, but they are both good parents,” a Hadid family friend told PEOPLE. “They are co-parenting their child.”
According to a statement from Hadid’s representative to PEOPLE, “Gigi’s only concern is what is best for Khai, and she requests privacy during this period.”
In November 2021, a source informed PEOPLE that despite the tension between Yolanda and Malik, Hadid was working to establish a peaceful co-parenting arrangement for their daughter’s benefit.
“Yolanda is upset with Zayn, but Gigi has stressed the importance of Khai having her father,” the source stated. “Gigi is doing everything she can to ensure that they co-parent in a respectful manner.”
Bella Hadid, her aunt, shares a special bond with her.
