Early Life
Born on 25 June 1974 in Mumbai, Karisma Kapoor hails from a family of actors. Her parents are Randhir Kapoor and Babita (née Shivdasani), and her younger sister is the well-known actress Kareena Kapoor. Her paternal grandfather was the renowned actor and filmmaker Raj Kapoor, while her maternal grandfather was actor Hari Shivdasani.
Her great-grandfather was actor Prithviraj Kapoor. She has uncles like Rishi and Rajiv Kapoor, and aunts like Neetu Singh and Ritu Nanda. Kapoor’s first cousins include actors Ranbir Kapoor, Armaan Jain, Aadar Jain, and Nikhil Nanda. Her grand-uncles are actors Shammi and Shashi Kapoor, and her mother’s first cousin was the late actress Sadhana.
At home, Kapoor is fondly referred to as “Lolo.” Her mother gave her this nickname after making a passing reference to the Italian actress Gina Lollobrigida. Kapoor’s grandparents on both sides had moved to Bombay for their film careers before the partition of India. They hailed from Peshawar, Lyallpur, and Karachi. On her father’s side, Kapoor is of Punjabi Hindu descent, and on her mother’s side, she is of Sindhi Hindu and British descent.
Kapoor had a strong passion for acting from a young age and was greatly influenced by the performances of renowned actresses Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit. She often accompanied her parents to film sets and attended award ceremonies during her upbringing. Despite her family’s longstanding involvement in the film industry, her father was opposed to women working in films due to traditional beliefs about maternal responsibilities.
This caused a rift in the family, leading to her parents’ separation in 1988. As a result, Kapoor and her younger sister Kareena were raised by their mother, who held various jobs to support them until Kapoor made her debut as an actress. After years of living separately, her parents reconciled in 2007. Kapoor received her education from the Cathedral and John Connon School, and briefly attended Sophia College before leaving to pursue acting as a means of financial support.
Career
Kapoor made her Hindi cinema debut at the age of 17 in 1991 with the movie Prem Qaidi. Despite her early start, her initial years in acting were marked by a string of flops. It wasn’t until she starred opposite Govinda in Raja Babu that she finally achieved her first hit. Her subsequent films Suhaag and Gopi Kishan were also successful at the box office, as was Coolie No. 1.
However, many of her films such as Police Officer, Jaagruti, Nishchaiy, Aatish, Andaz, Deedar, Sapne Sajan Ke, and Durarara failed to connect with audiences. Her most successful film to date remains Raja Hindustani.
