Born on 20 June 1958 as Puti Biranchi Tudu, Droupadi Murmu is an Indian politician who currently serves as the 15th President of India, a position she has held since 2022. She is the first individual from the tribal community to hold this office, as well as the second woman after Pratibha Patil.

Murmu is also the youngest President in Indian history, as well as the first to be born in Independent India. Prior to her current position, she served as the governor of Jharkhand from 2015 to 2021 and previously held the position of minister of state in the Government of Odisha, as well as serving as a member of the Legislative Assembly from Odisha.

Murmu began her professional career as a clerk in the State Irrigation and Power Department in 1979, before transitioning to a teaching role in Rairangpur until 1997.

Droupadi Murmu was born to a Santali family in June 1958 in Uparbeda village, located in the Baidaposi region of Rairangpur, Odisha. Her father, Biranchi Narayan Tudu, was a farmer, and both he and his father had served as traditional heads of the village council. While her family initially named her Puti Tudu, her schoolteacher changed her name to Droupadi, and it has undergone several other changes in the past.

Murmu received her elementary education at the local primary school in Uparbeda, after which she moved to Bhubaneswar at the age of five for further studies. She completed her secondary education at Girl’s High School Unit-2 and graduated from Rama Devi Women’s College with a B.A. degree.

In 1980, Murmu married Shyam Charan Murmu, a banker, and the couple had two sons and a daughter. Unfortunately, she experienced a series of tragic losses with the deaths of her husband, two sons, mother, and a brother within a span of seven years from 2009 to 2015. She follows the spiritual teachings of the Brahma Kumaris movement.

Murmu holds great admiration for India’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, and has also praised Mahatma Gandhi and B.R. Ambedkar.

Early career

Murmu worked as a junior assistant at the irrigation department of the Government of Odisha between 1979 and 1983. Later, from 1994 to 1997, she taught Hindi, Odia, Maths, and Geography at Sri Aurobindo Integral Education and Research Centre in Rairangpur. Interestingly, she never claimed a full salary from the school.

Political career

In 1997, Droupadi Murmu became a councilor of the Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat as an independent candidate from a reserved seat for women. Later, she joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

She won the Odisha Legislative Assembly election from Rairangpur Assembly constituency in 2000 and served two terms in the Odisha Legislative Assembly between 2000 and 2009. During the BJP and BJD coalition government in Odisha, she held the position of Minister of State with Independent Charge for Commerce and Transportation from March 2000 to August 2002, and for Fisheries and Animal Resources Development from August 2002 to May 2004.

In 2007, Murmu was awarded the Nilkanth Award for the Best MLA of the Odisha Legislative Assembly. In 2009, she was unsuccessful in the Lok Sabha election from Mayurbhanj Lok Sabha constituency as the BJD and BJP alliance had ended. In 2013, she was elected to the BJP National Executive (ST Morcha) and served as district president until 2015.

Presidential campaign

In 2022, Droupadi Murmu was nominated by the BJP as the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate for the President of India for the upcoming election. Yashwant Sinha was nominated as the candidate for president by the opposition parties.

Murmu campaigned across various states, seeking support for her candidature. Before polling, several opposition parties, including BJD, YSRCP, JMM, BSP, SS, JD(S) among others, had announced their support for her. On 21 July 2022, Murmu won the 2022 Presidential election with a clear majority.

She defeated the common opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha, securing 676,803 electoral votes (64.03% of the total) in 21 of the 28 states (including the union territory of Puducherry), and became the 15th President of India.

Droupadi Murmu was sworn in as the 15th President of India on July 26, 2022, becoming the first person from India’s designated tribal communities to hold the position. She is also the second woman to serve as President and the youngest individual born after India’s independence in 1947 to be elected to the role.

Murmu addressed the nation on August 14, 2022, and launched a government program in September 2022 called ‘Pradhanmantri TB mukht Bharat’ to eradicate Tuberculosis from the country. She also inaugurated the ‘Mysuru Dasara’ state festival in Karnataka, paid visits to the north-eastern states of the country, and went on to visit her home state of Odisha in November 2022.
