Amrita Singh’s parents are Rukhsana Sultana and Shivinder Singh Virk, an army officer. She was born on 9 February 1958 in Hadali, Pakistan, and is currently 65 years old as of 2023. During the Indian Emergency in the 1970s, Amrita’s mother was a political associate of Sanjay Gandhi and became known for leading his sterilization campaign in Muslim areas of Old Delhi.

Amrita’s paternal grandmother was Mohinder Kaur, making her the great-granddaughter of Sobha Singh, a builder of New Delhi, and the grandniece of the late novelist Khushwant Singh. She is also the great-grandniece of politician Ujjal Singh and the actress Begum Para is her great-aunt.

Amrita’s husband was Nasir Khan, the brother of Dilip Kumar, and her uncle (second cousin once removed) is actor Ayub Khan. She was childhood friends with Shah Rukh Khan, whose mother worked with Amrita’s mother in the Old Delhi area. Amrita attended Modern School in New Delhi and is fluent in English, Punjabi, and Hindi.

Amrita Singh marked her Bollywood debut in 1983, co-starring with Sunny Deol in Betaab. She enjoyed a golden period in her career during the following years, appearing in several other successful films, such as Sunny (1984), Mard (1985), Saaheb (1985), Naam (1986), Chameli Ki Shaadi (1986), Khudgarz (1987), Waaris (1988), and others. Singh also played negative roles in movies such as Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman (1992) and Aaina (1993). However, after the film Rang (1993), she took a break from acting.

Singh returned to acting in 2002 with 23rd March 1931: Shaheed, in which she portrayed the role of Bhagat Singh’s mother (played by Bobby Deol). She made her television debut in 2005 with Ekta Kapoor’s family drama Kavyanjali. After almost two decades, in 2013, she starred alongside Jackie Shroff in Aurangzeb. In 2017, Singh garnered acclaim for her role as a principal in the drama film Hindi Medium.
