Ever since BTS changed the course of the world by creating individual Instagram accounts in late 2021, maknae Jungkook quickly became a legend on the app. His original user name, @abcdefghi__lmnopqrstuvwxyz, became viral almost instantly, birthing many memes and even inspiring some brands so much so that many mourned its absence when the South Korean performer decided to change it to @jungkook.97, inarguably a much more conventional option, in 2022.
Now, fans have a real reason to lament as Jungkook has officially deactivated his Instagram account.Â
On February 28, fans were surprised to see Jungkook’s Instagram account was nowhere to be found on the social app. On mobile, tapping the singer’s handle immediately prompts an ominous “User not found” warning.
On desktop, the long-dreaded “Sorry, this page isn’t available” also appears. @jungkook.97 is no more. (Per Google, Jungkook’s account had a little over 52 million followers and 87 posts when it was deactivated, though if you fancy a walk down memory lane, BTS’s U.S. fanbase has a handy archive. )
After noticing the sudden disappearance, fans naturally began to speculate the cause on social media, many landing on a potential hack as the most plausible option. However, Jungkook himself quickly stepped in to clear the air, posting a quick explanation to BTS’s official Weverse account.
As it turns out, it was Jungkook himself that decided to deactivate his account. The reason? He just wasn’t using it that much. “It wasn’t hacked,” he clarified, “so don’t worry!” Not only has Jungkook said bye to the account, but he’s also confirmed he’s deleted the app entirely from his phone, which honestly, in this day and age, is more than commendable!
Though his Instagram account is caput, JK said he will still be in contact with fans via Weverse Live. Just like Jungkook, life gives and life takes, and we all just need to collectively remember that, most of the time, it is probably not that serious!
