Amancio Amaro: Real Madrid legend dies, aged 83
Amancio Amaro,ย Real Madridย legend and honorary president of the club, has died at the age of 83. He was born on October 16, 1939 in La Coruna and served as both a player and coach of Los Blancos, a team that he joined in 1962 after playing forย Deportivo de La Coruna.
Amancioย plied his trade atย Real Madridย between 1962 and 1976, winning the sixth European Cup, nine LaLiga titles and three Copa del Rey trophies.
In his 14 seasons at the club, ‘El Brujo’ played 471 games and scored 155 goals, being the Pichichi of the First Division in 1969 and 1970.
In 1964, Amancio came third in the voting for Ballon d’Or and won the European Championship with Spain. Amancio retired on June 30, 1976, as Real Madrid‘s fourth all-time top scorer behind Alfredo Di Stefano, Ferenc Puskas and Paco Gento.
Amancio’s signing for Real Madrid
Real Madrid beat Barcelona to sign Amancio, who had just become the top scorer in the Second Division with 25 goals in 26 games. President Santiago Bernabeu sealed the deal despite facing opposition from his board of directors.
Real Madridย paid 12 million pesetas for ‘El Brujo’, a winger who made history at the club.ย Amancioย also marked an era as a coach atย Real Madridย by leadingย Castillaย to the Second Division title in 1984.
The following season he took charge of Real Madrid‘s first team and consolidated the mythical ‘Quinta del Buitre’ consisting of players Emilio Butragueno, Michel, Manolo Sanchis, Rafael Martin Vazquez and Miguel Pardeza.
Back in October,ย Amancioย succeededย Paco Gentoย as honorary president ofย Real Madridย after the latter’s death.
“Real Madrid, the club’s president and its Board of Directors are deeply saddened by the passing ofย Amancio Amaro,ย Real Madrid‘s honorary president and one of the greatest legends of our club and of world football,” read Real Madrid’s official statement.
“Real Madrid would like to extend its condolences and sympathy to his wife Consuelo, his children Iscar, Belen, Amancio, Patricia, Marcos and Claudia, his brother Juan Carlos, his grandchildren and all his relatives, colleagues and loved ones.”
