The first season of The Rig has been entirely filmed in Scotland, keeping up with the backdrop of the show. The shooting commenced in March 2021 and was concluded in August of the same year. So, without much ado, let’s have a look at all the places where The Rig was filmed.

Edinburgh, Scotland

The series has been mainly shot in Edinburgh, the capital and second most populous city of Scotland. The first stage Studios served as the filming location for some major sequences, including those of the Kinloch Bravo oil rig. The studio, located at 31 Bath Road in Edinburgh’s Leith, comprises an 8.5-acre property.

It has two production offices, a huge workshop space, a parking space, and additional stores for art and costumes. Some key scenes were also filmed on a real oil rig, situated on the east coast of Scotland.

Actor Iain Glen, who stars as one of the leads, Magnus MacMillan, shared his experience working in Scotland and wrote, “The Rig finished this week. It really has been a blast! Truly one of the most enjoyable jobs ever. Shooting in beautiful Edinburgh, the city of my childhood, with a fantastic, talented, and great fun cast.”

“Top notch crew putting together what I hope will be a special drama. Set on an Oil Rig in the unforgiving North Sea. Expect the unexpected,” he added. Meanwhile, a number of mishappening also took place during the filming in Edinburgh.

The set caught fire while a stunt sequence was being filmed with actor Martin Compston. In another incident, Iain Glen fell off a crane while performing a stunt. Fortunately, he was wearing harnesses at the time and was not harmed in the accident.

Edinburgh is known for its hills, gardens, and neoclassical buildings. The city is home to various museums and libraries, including the National Library of Scotland, the Museum of Childhood, the National War Museum, the National Museum of Scotland, and the Writers’ Museum.

A number of shows have been filmed in the city earlier as well, including Downton Abbey, The Crown, Monarch of the Glen, and Outlander. The city has also served as the filming location for films like F9: The Fast Saga, Avengers: Infinity War, A Castle for Christmas, The Da Vinci Code, The 12th Man, The Awakening, and Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga.
