The KTN is used to identify travelers who are eligible for expedited security screening at airports.
How to get a Known Traveler Number
To obtain a KTN, travelers must apply for TSA Precheck and be approved. To apply, travelers must provide personal information, including their name, date of birth, and address, and must also provide their fingerprints for a background check. Once approved, travelers will receive a KTN, which they can use when booking flights to participate in TSA Precheck.
To use your KTN when booking a flight, you will need to enter it in the “Known Traveler Number” field when booking your ticket. Your KTN will also be printed on your boarding pass. When you arrive at the airport, you will need to look for the TSA Precheck lane and present your boarding pass and government-issued ID.
If you are approved for TSA Precheck, your boarding pass will have a TSA Precheck indicator on it, and you can proceed through the dedicated TSA Precheck lane for expedited security screening.
What if I can’t find my KTN number?
If you are unable to find your Known Traveler Number (KTN), there are a few steps you can take to try to locate it:
- Check your email: If you applied for TSA Precheck online, you should have received an email with your KTN shortly after your application was approved. Check your email account(s) for any emails from the TSA or the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
- Check your account on the TSA Precheck website: If you applied for TSA Precheck online and created an account, you should be able to view your KTN by logging into your account on the TSA Precheck website.
- Check with the issuing agency: If you applied for TSA Precheck through a participating airline or in person at an enrollment center, you should contact the agency that issued your KTN for assistance.
If you are still unable to locate your KTN, you can try contacting the TSA Precheck Customer Support Center at 855-347-8371 for assistance. Be prepared to provide your name, date of birth, and any other relevant information to help them locate your KTN.

Can you add a KTN after checking in?
It is generally not possible to add a Known Traveler Number (KTN) after you have already checked in for your flight. In order to participate in TSA Precheck, you must provide your KTN when booking your ticket or checking in for your flight.
If you do not have a KTN or do not provide it when booking your ticket or checking in, you will not be able to participate in TSA Precheck and will need to go through the regular security screening process.
If you have recently applied for TSA Precheck and have not yet received your KTN, you may still be able to participate in TSA Precheck by providing your application number when booking your ticket or checking in.
However, this will only be possible if you applied for TSA Precheck through a participating airline or in person at an enrollment center, and if your application has been approved but your KTN has not yet been issued.
If you have already checked in for your flight and have not provided your KTN, you may be able to modify your reservation to include your KTN if you have one, or to apply for TSA Precheck if you have not yet done so.
