The best upcoming PS5 games: 2022, 2023, and beyond

The PlayStation 5 has been out for some time now, and its reception has been mostly positive. It includes lots of quality-of-life improvements over its predecessor, the PlayStation 4, such as faster load times, a solid-state drive (SSD) instead of a regular hard disk drive (HDD), and an improved controller thanks to the new DualSense. Having said all that, a console is only as good as the games available on it, and thankfully, the PS5 has you covered on that front as well.

During the PS5’s reveal event, we got a tease for the sequel to 2018’s God of War. Now officially titled God of War: Ragnarok, we know it’ll be coming out in 2022, as revealed during the September 2021 PlayStation Showcase. While there still are a slew of questions about Ragnarok, we do know it’ll feature Freya and Thor as antagonists, along with an older Atreus. The 2021 trailer for this game showed off some gameplay, along with some imagery of new locales. Sony is gearing up for this game’s launch later this fall, and it’s easily one of the biggest releases of the year.

We do know it’ll run on the same engine as Modern Warfare II, and both are being built from the ground up alongside one another. Warzone 2.0 will hopefully run more smoothly than its predecessor, with various quality-of-life improvements, along with new features as well. It’ll launch this fall.

This third-person survival horror game is gearing up to be one of the scariest games of all time. Genre
Racing

Developer
Criterion Games

Electronic Arts

Release
December 02, 2022

The most striking thing about the new Need for Speed Unbound is the game’s art direction, which ditches realism in favor of a cel-shaded anime style. This is a huge change for the series and serves as a visual representation of a new era of Need for Speed. Beyond its excellent visuals, this game is exciting because it marks the return of Criterion Games, the studio known for developing the Burnout series and that also worked on Need for Speed games in the past. This game will have street races, an open world, and the beloved Heat System from Need for Speed Heat, so there’s a lot to look forward to with this new installment.

Release
August 29, 2016

Unlike Cyberpunk 2077, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was critically acclaimed when it launched in 2015. So much so that it went on to win numerous awards and Game of the Year nods. As expected, CD Projekt Red will be releasing an enhanced version of the RPG for PS5, with improved visuals and lighting. Sadly, the team had to delay the new version of the game, likely due to the pandemic and other factors tied to Cyberpunk 2077‘s development. Nonetheless, we’ll likely get to play the enhanced version of The Witcher 3 in the fourth quarter of 2022.

Release
December 31, 2022

Little Devil Inside is a new game from Neostream Interactive. This survival RPG made a splash during The Future of Gaming presentation, as its beautiful art style quickly set it apart from the crowd. Beyond graphics, the third-person action seems to be shaping up nicely, and the trailer features some remarkable monster designs. We’re not sure how the story will unfold — the trailer kept cutting back and forth between an old man in his home and an adventurer slaying beasts — but we can’t wait to get our hands on it.

PC (Microsoft Windows), PlayStation 5

Genre

It was previously called Project Athia, but it finally has an official name: Forspoken. The title is a console exclusive for PlayStation 5 — it’s an action RPG with some fantasy elements and a heavy emphasis on fast, fluid traversal. It was originally supposed to come out in the spring of 2022 but has been delayed twice.

Release
February 03, 2023

After being in development hell for the better part of a decade, Dead Island 2 will finally launch in 2023. The game was first revealed at E3 2014 and has since undergone numerous developer changes. Currently, Dambuster Studios is leading development and based on the game’s recent re-reveal, it seems Dead Island 2 is nearing completion. This installment will be comically violent, with a slew of RPG mechanics and cooperative play, building upon the features from the original 2011 game. The sequel’s tone seems to have remained consistent throughout its development, with an emphasis on ridiculousness rather than a grounded take on a zombie story.

Genre
Adventure

Developer
Omega Force

Release
February 17, 2023

Hailing from Electronic Arts and Omega Force — the studio best known for the Dynasty Warriors games — Wild Hearts is most akin to Monster Hunter. In it, you and up to two other friends team up to take down massive beasts, each with their own distinct powers and fighting styles. The one thing about Wild Hearts that stands out from the Monster Hunter games is that it looks far more realistic and, in some ways, more vibrant. But Wild Hearts also does a fantastic job of onboarding the player, and thanks to its simplified UI and accessibility options, it could reach a large audience.

It will be an action-adventure game with stealth elements, and Gollum won’t look like he does in the Peter Jackson movies. It also won’t be going for a hyper-realistic art style, unlike the recent Mordor games from Warner Bros. The Lord of the Rings: Gollum has been delayed multiple times to ensure it meets expectations. It’s now set to launch sometime in early 2023

The final version of Skull and Bones is a mix of Ubisoft’s open-world titles, survival games, and a more detailed version of the Assassin’s Creed series’ naval combat. This won’t play out like other Resident Evil games, as the deadly enemies aren’t zombies but infected villagers who are just as terrifying as the undead. This game seems like it will follow in the footsteps of the Resident Evil 2 remake, giving us the same story with gameplay improvements and 4K visuals for modern consoles. It’ll launch in March 2023.

In it, you take on the role of a new hero/heroine called The Hunter, with a completely customizable set of powers and moves. You will still be able to control other popular characters such as Wolverine, Iron Man, Captain America, and Ghost Rider, among others. Marvel’s Midnight Suns will play similarly to XCOM, so if you love those types of turn-based tactics games, you should keep your eye out for this one. Sadly, this game was delayed from October to the first half of 2023.

11. Final Fantasy XVI — Summer 2023

Genre
Role-playing (RPG)

Developer
Square Enix Creative Business Unit III

Publisher
Square Enix

The PS5 showcase on September 16, 2020, kicked off with the reveal of Final Fantasy XVI, and it looks to be more fantasy-driven than its predecessor. On top of that, it will be a PS5 console exclusive, meaning you’ll have to get a PS5 if you plan on playing it outside of the PC ecosystem. Final Fantasy XVI certainly looks jaw-dropping in the visual department. At the end of 2021, Final Fantasy XVI producer Naoki Yoshida revealed the game is behind schedule and has been delayed by “almost a half year,” due to COVID complications. At Sony’s June 2022 State of Play, a new trailer revealed the game is coming in the summer of 2023.

December 31, 2023

One of our most-anticipated games of 2023 is Black Myth: Wukong, a Souls-like from Chinese studio Game Science. In it, you play as a monkey who has the ability to turn into different creatures, which is a fun twist on the Souls formula. Considering the small size of the studio, it’s impressive just how good this game looks. Sadly, we’ll have to wait a while to play it, as it won’t be ready until at least 2023.

13. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 — 2023

Platforms
PlayStation 5

Genre
Hack and slash/Beat ’em up, Adventure

Developer
Insomniac Games

Publisher
Sony Interactive Entertainment

Release
December 31, 2023

During the 2021 PlayStation Showcase, Sony finally revealed Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, the follow-up to one of 2018’s best games. We knew it was inevitable there would be a sequel, but it was nice to finally receive some confirmation of this. The game isn’t going to launch until 2023, but there’s a lot to be excited about based on the announcement trailer. For one, we know Miles Morales will fight alongside Peter Parker. It’s unclear how this will work, though — if we’ll get to play as one or the other, or both — but either way, we’ll be in for a good time. We also know Venom will make an appearance, as shown in the trailer, but fans also pointed out that Kraven the Hunter will likely play a part, as well. The character can be heard narrating the trailer. It’ll be a while before Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is ready to play, but judging by this list, there’s no shortage of games to play in the meantime.

Developer Overkill Software did confirm it will take place in a “living, enormous representation” of New York City, taking place after the events of Payday 2. Even though gameplay hasn’t been revealed, you can likely expect the same fantastic first-person shooter gameplay, with an emphasis on gathering as much loot as you can. There’s a random element to Payday, which will hopefully result in various level layouts and spawns across each heist.

This game will send players on a journey through the kingdom of Pharloom with the goal of reaching the top. Following Street Fighter 6‘s showing at Summer Game Fest, excitement has gone through the roof, thanks to its impressive visuals, presentation, and features. It’ll offer three main modes, including Fighting Ground, World Tour, and Battle Hub, and has six confirmed characters thus far, including Chun-Li, Guile, Jamie, Kimberly, Luke, and Ryu. More will be announced as we get closer to the game’s release in 2023. This one certainly seems to be an exciting return to form for Street Fighter, especially considering the fifth installment’s lackluster initial response. Capcom is aiming not to repeat the same mistakes from before, and you can tell based on what’s been shown of Street Fighter 6.

It’ll be exclusive to new-generation hardware, hopefully meaning it’ll push the boundaries of the technology without being held back by PS4 and Xbox One. There isn’t much we know about this game, but we’re excited to get our hands on it in 2023.

So far, we know the Barbarian, Sorceress, Druid, Rogue, and Necromancer classes will be added, but fans are expecting more to be announced before the game launches. This one won’t be out for a while, but based on the marketing material thus far, it’s shaping up to be a monumental release.

22. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth — 2023

Platforms
PlayStation 5

December 31, 2023

Serving as a continuation of the acclaimed Final Fantasy VII Remake, the next part, officially titled Rebirth, will launch in 2023. Square Enix announced the game during the recent Final Fantasy VII event, where it confirmed the game will be a PS5 exclusive. It will be directed by Naoki Hamaguchi, who was the co-director of the first installment. As you might be aware, Final Fantasy VII Remake only covers a small portion of the original game, so there’s still a lot of the story left to tell. It’s unclear when it will launch or how much of the story it will cover, but what is apparent is that fans are as excited as ever to continue Cloud’s journey. Here’s an interesting one: MachineGames, the studio behind the newer Wolfenstein games, is working on an untitled Indiana Jones game in collaboration with publisher Bethesda under the Lucasfilm Games umbrella. Todd Howard is set to executive produce, but aside from a short 30-second teaser trailer, there’s not much we know about this one. It will be interesting to see if it will be presented in the third person, as MachineGames has exclusively worked on first-person shooters.

6. Marvel’s Wolverine

One of the greatest surprises during the 2021 PlayStation Showcase was the reveal of Marvel’s Wolverine, a project in development by Insomniac Games. That’s right, the studio is juggling Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and this game simultaneously, showing how impressive the team is. This one is even earlier in development than Spider-Man 2 and doesn’t have a release window just yet. It’s unclear if it will tie to the Spider-Man games or if it will be its own separate story — though we’re inclined to believe they’ll be connected. The reveal trailer doesn’t give us a glimpse of gameplay, but we can probably expect it to be a third-person action adventure with a large open world to explore. What we do know is that you’ll need a PS5 to play this one when it comes out.

Dragon’s Dogma II will run on the RE Engine, which was used for many recent Capcom games, including Resident Evil Village. During this game’s official reveal, Capcom did not offer a release window, so it’ll likely come out sometime in 2024 or even later.

While the developers say that everything is going well with Quantum Error, it’s still up in the air whether it will be a launch title. It’s scheduled to release at an unspecified date.

9. Mass Effect

Genre

While it’s still very early in development, we do know a new Mass Effect game is coming from BioWare. Following its official reveal at The Game Awards 2020, there is a slew of questions fans have about the project — most importantly, how it will tie to the original trilogy. In the trailer, we got to see Liara, one of the main characters from the original trilogy, though it’s unclear when in the timeline this new game will take place and what this character’s role will be. There are lots of questions the community has, but one thing’s for sure: You shouldn’t expect to play this one for quite some time — possibly as late as 2024.

Coming from Hitman developer IO Interactive, the team is now working on a James Bond game under the working title Project 007. Much like a lot of the games on this list, Project 007 likely won’t launch for a few years.

Project Eve is a new action game from developer Shift Up Corporation. It’s reminiscent of Bayonetta, with action at the forefront. It will feature a free-flow combat system wherein you must attack, dodge, and defend, making split-second decisions on the fly. Project Eve will include DualSense features such as haptic feedback that will increase the immersion. This one has been in development for a while now, so we’re hoping it’s ready to launch sometime in 2022.

Kicking off the 2021 PlayStation Showcase was the announcement of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake. It’s still very early in development and will likely be a while before it’s ready to launch. The original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic launched for Xbox in 2003 and was developed by BioWare, the team behind Mass Effect and Dragon Age. The remake is being handled by Aspyr, the studio that developed remasters of Star Wars: Episode I — Racer, Star Wars: Jedi Knight — Jedi Academy, and Star Wars: Republic Commando. Interestingly, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake will be a PS5 timed console exclusive, though it’s unclear for how long. In 2022, it was reportedly delayed indefinitely, so we likely won’t get to play this game any time soon.

Untitled Ubisoft Star Wars game

Now that EA’s exclusive Star Wars deal has expired, other companies — such as Ubisoft — are free to work on games within the beloved franchise. We know Ubisoft Massive is now developing an open-world Star Wars game under the Lucasfilm Games umbrella. This will be the first Star Wars game published by a company other than EA since 2013. It’s unknown when it’ll launch, but our guess is 2024.

It’s been forever since we last walked the vampire-ridden streets of Bloodlines, and we can’t wait to see how much has changed during that time. Recent footage of the game displayed more chaos, a grittier Seattle locale, and a deep, branching storyline. Unfortunately, the game suffered a recent delay, pushing it to an unknown release window.
