- Tuesday’s Group B encounter took place at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium in Al Rayyan, Qatar.
- FIFA rankings: England (5), Wales (19).
England XI: Pickford, Walker (Alexander-Arnold, 57), Stones, Maguire, Shaw (Trippier, 65′), Rice (Phillips, 57′), Henderson, Bellingham, Foden, Kane (Wilson, 57′), Rashford (Grealish, 75′).
England players to watch
Captain Harry Kane, the Golden Boot winner and top scorer at the 2018 World Cup, is two goals away from equalling England’s top all-time scorer Wayne Rooney’s record of 53 goals.
England’s rising star 19-year-old Jude Bellingham already scored a goal during the match against Iran. And Bukayo Saka, 21, struck twice, making him one of England’s driving forces.
Wales XI: Ward, Williams (Roberts, 36′), Mepham, Rodon, Davies (Morrell, 57′), Allen (Colwill, 81′), Ampadu, Bale (Johnson, 46′), Ramsey, James (Wilson, 77′), Moore.
Wales players to watch
Star Welsh players Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey have failed to deliver thus far in Qatar.
They will be eager to redeem themselves – and score – on Tuesday. Bale mustered just one shot on target against Iran.
Yet Bale remains the lone Welsh player to have ever scored a goal against England in the 21st century when Wales lost 2-1 to England at the 2016 Euros.
Kick-off:Wales vs England
Wales get us under way wearing their traditional red kit, playing left to right on your screens. England have donned a white jersey with navy shorts.
Here we go.
Southgate playing it safe
They’ve gone with three in midfield in the game with the least amount of jeopardy so far in this tournament, with Bellingham less attacking than Mason Mount who’s dropped out. It’s helping them hold onto the ball thus far, with Wales barely getting a touch since kickoff.
5 mins: Wales 0-0 England
UK minister sports ‘OneLove’ armband
Stuart Andrew, a sport minister for the United Kingdom’s government, has been pictured wearing the “OneLove” armband while attending tonight’s fixture.
Seven European teams, including England and Wales, abandoned plans for their captains to wear the rainbow-themed armband at the World Cup after FIFA threatened to issue yellow cards to any players who did so.
Big save from Ward!
Marcus Rashford should probably score after Kane puts the Manchester United forward through on goal, but the Welsh keeper is quick off his line to block his shot. They got in quite easily off turnover ball there.
11 mins: Wales 0-0 England
Williams gets ball on head
It’s brave from the Nottingham Forest wingback, who puts his head directly in the way of a Rashford shot from distance. It seems to land square on the top of his noggin, and would definitely have hurt.
He gets the all clear from the medical team to continue after some checks.
26 mins: Wales 0-0 England
Foden skies it over
Some lovely play from Jude Bellingham in the build up isn’t rewarded with the required finish from Foden, who gets too much lift on his strike and it goes well over. Marauding run by the midfielder prior to that, though.
39 mins: Wales 0-0 England
England corner headed away
Foden sticks it in the mixer but his in-swinger is easily cleared by the Welsh defence. It’s been all Gareth Southgate’s side in the opening period.
43 mins: Wales 0-0 England
Five minutes added on
Wales have been chasing shadows for the half so far and it’s been a disappointing opening period for coach Rob Page once again. They have time to change that narrative, though.
46 mins: Wales 0-0 England
Kane shot deflected
The shot appeared to hit Harry Maguire, but the referee gives England the corner anyway. Ward catches the ball after Stones heads towards the back post from the delivery.
45+3 mins: Wales 0-0 England
Half-time:Wales 0-0 England
Wales won’t be too displeased with the scoreline but they need to show more up front if they are to get the win they need. Gareth Southgate’s team have dominated the ball and used it well in the Welsh half without creating too many clear cut chances.
Ward’s save from Rashford early in the game was the standout moment.
Wales 0-0 England
Second half under way
England gets the second period going, playing left to right in this half. Brennan Johnson is on for Gareth Bale, which you imagine is down to injury though there is no confirmation.
46 mins: Wales 0-0 England
GOAL
Rashford slams a free-kick in from 25 yards! Foden won the set-piece from a driving run at the Welsh defence and there are some questions over Ward’s positioning in the Welsh goal.
He looked to be slightly unsighted.
50 mins: Wales 0-1 England
GOAL!
Foden makes it two and that’s probably lights out for Wales. It’s an easy finish after a peach of a ball across the Wales goal by Harry Kane.
Game over?
52 mins: Wales 0-2 England
Harry Kane, assist machine
Harry Kane, England’s star striker, has turned into an assist machine in Qatar.
His incisive pass to Foden, who tapped in to make it 2-0 to England, means England’s captain has now created three goals at the 2022 World Cup, more than any other player so far.
GOAL
Rashford kills off Wales after dancing through the Welsh defence! He shoots straight at Danny Ward in goal, who should probably do better but it deflects off his foot and into the net.
He made that one himself and it’s well deserved.
70 mins: Wales 0-3 England
Rashford nearly gets a hat-trick
A neat interchange of passing between Rashford and Wilson leads to the Man United forward poking his low shot at Ward, who this time manages to push it away for a corner.
74 mins: Wales 0-3 England
Moore wins free kick
Harry Maguire tugs back the shirt of the Welsh striker and brings him down as they chase a long pass. Wilson’s shot goes straight into the England wall though, and it’s a wasted rare opportunity.
85 mins: Wales 0-3 England
Full-time:Wales 0-3 England
It went the way of form as England ran out clear winners and weathered very little threat from Wales all game. A Rashford double perhaps guarantees his place for the knockouts, and it was a game where Southgate could both rotate and empty his bench.
A first World Cup in 64 years for Wales ends early, but they faced a better quality opposition in Group B in all their games in truth.
Wales 0-3 England
