The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) has released a list of vehicles that won’t be allowed to be imported into Kenya starting from the new financial year in July 2022.

KEBs is a statutory body mandated to offer quality inspection of imports based on Kenyan standards and approved specifications.

  1. Buses category

KEBs noted that all used passenger minibus, midibus, large buses, single articulated, bi-articulated buses, and double-decker buses shall not be allowed for importation into the country.

The government agency, however, said used passenger microbuses (up to seven metres in overall length) shall be continued to be imported as long as they are not older than eight years from the first year of regisration.

  1. Rigid trucks

The standards body stated that all imports of all used rigid trucks with gross vehicle mass (GVM) equal to or greater than 3.5 tonnes and up to including 30 tonnes won’t be imported.

  1. Tractor heads and prime movers

Tractor heads and prime movers not older than three years from the first year of registration shall be allowed to be imported. However, this will only apply until June 30, 2023, when a ban would be imposed.

  1. Second-hand vehicles older than eight years

All second-hand vehicles older than eight years from the first year of registration shall not be imported.

  1. Vehicles that do not meet EURO 4 requirements

All imported new diesel-powered and petrol-powered vehicles must meet the requirements of EURO 4 before they are imported into Kenya. According to EURO 4 requirements, petrol cars must produce CO of no more than 1.0g/km, Total Hydro Carbon (THCs) emissions of no more than 0.10g/km and NOx emissions of 0.08g/km.

KEBs urged importers and members of the public intending to import cars to familiarise themselves with the requirements before making any purchase.
