Soweto, near Johannesburg, is the largest Black capital in the country. These were created by the white supremacist regime, which ended in 1994 but whose legacy of widespread poverty and youth unemployment continues nearly three decades later.
Gunmen armed with rifles and pistols opened fire on people sitting in a tavern in a South African suburb of Soweto early Sunday, killing 15 and injuring nine, police said.
The killings took place shortly after 6 pm, according to police who said the group of men entered an Orlando East tavern before “firing on customers indiscriminately”. The unidentified gunmen fled the scene and are now fleeing, police said, adding that it was not known how many were involved in the attack.
According to local police officer Nonhlanhla Kubheka, 12 people were already dead from gunshot wounds when police arrived at the scene.
She added that 11 people were taken to hospital and that three died shortly after arrival.
Nobody has been arrested. Officers are still on site. They came and shot at people who were having fun,” said Kubheka, commander of the Orlando police station, the Soweto district where the shooting took place.
