The 22-year-old sealed a British record £105 million move to Stamford Bridge from Benfica just hours before the transfer deadline on Tuesday evening.
Fernandez is regarded as one of the world’s top midfield talents. He helped Argentina to World Cup glory at the end of last year and was named Best Young Player at the tournament.
His Premier League arrival brings an end to Chelsea’s outrageous month of spending, totaling eight players and over £300 million.
Fernandez has taken the number five shirt, which previously belonged to Jorginho. The veteran midfielder was allowed to join Arsenal on deadline day as the Blues negotiated for Fernandez’s signature.
If you’re one to put stock in shirt numbers, it points to Fernandez being a key player as Blues boss Graham Potter looks to turn their season around.
Chelsea sit 10th in the Premier League and 10 points behind Manchester United, who occupy the final place in the Premier League’s top four.
To commemorate the former River Plate man’s arrival, Chelsea produced a TikTok inspired by the ‘Double It And Give It To The Next Person’ trend. You can watch it in the player above.
Chelsea’s TikTok admin first approaches Kai Havertz, Ben Chilwell and Conor Gallagher at the club’s Cobham Training Centre with a home shirt.
He asks the trio if they’d like to wear the number 1.25 shirt. Chilwell looks to Gallagher and Havertz before asking if it can be doubled for the next person.
Deep into the training complex, the admin finds Reece James. He’s then asked if he’d like to take number 2.5. The England full-back turns it down, asking for it to be doubled. You know where it’s going at this point.
Fernandez is the admin’s last hope. Thankfully, he’s more than happy to wear number five. He flashes a huge smile to the camera before belting out: “I’ll take that. Enzo Fernandez, number five!”
Considering how expensive Fernandez was, supporters expected something much grander for his arrival.
One person put: “Chilwell deserves an Oscar for that acting bro was so surprised.”
Another said: “Another painful watch.”
Someone commented: “Is this how Todd Boehly decides on the transfer fee for players.”
While a fourth added: “Need a new media team lads.”
The video’s received 509,000 likes at the time of recording. It must be going down well with some, at least. Fernandez could make his debut in Chelsea’s next game. They face Fulham at home on Friday evening.
