Taylor Swift has released the official video for “Willow,” the lead single from her ninth studio album, “Evermore.” This album, her second surprise release of 2020, arrived on December 11, 2020, under Republic Records. Swift, who directed the video herself, presents a fairy tale narrative where she follows a magical, glowing string through a forest to find her true love.
“Willow” is a chamber folk love song filled with metaphors that explore Swift’s romantic feelings through the imagery of a willow tree bending in the wind. The song features a blend of picked guitars, glockenspiel, flute, strings, and percussion, creating a whimsical musical backdrop.
The release of “Evermore” came unexpectedly, announced just hours before its release and less than six months after her eighth album, “Folklore,” which garnered six Grammy nominations. Swift described “Evermore” as the “sister record” to “Folklore,” inspired by the continued urge to venture deeper into the folklorian woods of music.
This release coincides with Swift’s effort to re-record her first six albums following the acquisition of her masters by music mogul Scooter Braun in 2019, which were later sold to a Westwood-based investment fund for over $300 million. The album “Evermore” features tracks like “Champagne Problems,” “Gold Rush,” and “No Body, No Crime” with Haim, among others.
