Malti Devi (5 August 1968 – 6 September 1999) was an Indian political and social activist who served as a Member of Parliament from the Nawada constituency in the state of Bihar. She contested the election on the Rashtriya Janata Dal party ticket and won the seat.

Malti Devi (1943 – 2003) was an Indian woman who was married to the late founder of the Samajwadi Party, Mulayam Singh Yadav. Her son, Akhilesh Yadav, is a well-known Indian politician. Malti Devi passed away in 2003 due to a heart attack.
Early life
Born on 5 August 1968 in the Manglagori village in Gaya district, Bihar, Malti Devi was married to Bhubaneshwar Prasad on 4 February 1984 and had two sons. Although she left her school education in 1980.
When Mulayam Singh Yadav got married to Malti Devi in 1957, she was just fourteen years old. Although their marriage was official in 1957, their family members organized their marriage guana ceremony in 1962.
According to some media sources, Mulayam Singh traveled about 20-22 km from Saifai to Malti’s house in Raipur, Uttar Pradesh, on a procession of five buffaloes to marry her. During the marriage procession, all guests from the groom’s side were welcomed with pomp and a gold chain by Malti Devi’s family members.
In 1973, Malti Devi gave birth to their son Akhilesh Yadav, who is now an acclaimed Indian politician. Unfortunately, Malti Devi went into a vegetative state due to medical complications soon after delivering their son.
Politics and activism
As a political and social worker, Malti Devi was a prominent leader in the Farmers Movement and a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist), where she advocated for the rights of women, landless farmers, and tribals in central and south Bihar. After leaving the C.P.I. (ML) in 1995, she served as a member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly from 1995 to 1998 and was elected to the 12th Lok Sabha in 1998.
During her tenure in parliament, she was a member of the Committee on Urban and Rural Development, as well as its Sub-Committee-I on Urban Affairs and Employment. Additionally, she served as a member of the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
Death
Malti Devi, after suffering a heart attack, passed away on 24 May 2003 in the Saifai village of Etawah district, located in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

Facts
- Following the demise of Malti Devi on 27 May 2003, Mulayam Singh Yadav tied the knot with Sadhna Gupta. It is said that Mulayam and Sadhna had a romantic relationship even before Malti Devi’s passing. Sadhna already had a son from her previous marriage whom Mulayam adopted. Although they got married in 2003 after Malti Devi’s death, Mulayam officially acknowledged his marriage to Sadhna in 2007 when he submitted an affidavit to the Supreme Court of India regarding a case involving disproportionate assets. In the affidavit, he also acknowledged Prateek Yadav as his son.
- When Akhilesh Yadav became the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh in 2012, he extended an invitation to his maternal uncle, Maharaj Singh Yadav, for his oath-taking ceremony. According to reports, Mulayam Singh Yadav warmly welcomed Maharaj Singh and arranged a luxurious hotel for his stay.
