Biography

Cassidy Jacqueline Hutchinson, a former White House official under the Trump administration, served as Mark Meadows’ assistant. On June 28, 2022, she testified before the US House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack, providing testimony about the behavior of President Donald Trump and his top advisers and political allies before and during the Capitol attack on January 6, 2021. Hutchinson’s testimony received national attention and was commended by various media sources as “compelling” and “explosive,” though she also faced criticism from Trump’s staunch supporters.

As Meadows’ personal confidante, Hutchinson traveled with him, took notes during meetings, kept an eye on his phone, and relayed his instructions. She was a “White House legislative aide” and was photographed dancing with White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany at the conclusion of Trump’s September 21, 2020 campaign rally in Swanton, Ohio, to the Village People song “Y.M.C.A.”

Hutchinson graduated from Hopewell Valley Central High School in 2015 and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and American Studies from Christopher Newport University in 2019. She was made Meadows’ legislative aide and accompanied him to Capitol Hill for serious meetings, having “very close access to Meadows,” according to one source. However, she had a falling out with Meadows in 2021 and was supposed to go to Mar-a-Lago as the permanent staff, though it never happened.

Hutchinson’s experience working closely with Meadows provided the committee with further insight into his efforts to overturn the election and knowledge of the events of January 6. She testified to the committee for at least 20 hours, providing information on key meetings at the White House as Trump and his allies tried to overturn the election results. She witnessed several key episodes leading up to January 6, as well as some of Trump’s real-time reactions that day.

During her interviews with the committee, Hutchinson testified that Republican members of Congress, including Reps. Matt Gaetz, Andy Biggs, Scott Perry, and Louie Gohmert, requested preemptive pardons after January 6. She also testified that Meadows was warned prior to the insurrection of the potential for violence, but he refuses to speak to the House committee. Prior to her testimony, Hutchinson replaced her lawyer, who had close ties to Trump and became increasingly aware of the safety risks involved.

Career

While still a student at Christopher Newport University, Hutchinson completed internships with Republican Senator Ted Cruz in the summer of 2016 and with Steve Scalise, spokesman for the Republican-controlled US House of Representatives, in the summer of 2017. In the summer of 2018, she served as an apprentice at the White House Office of Legislative Affairs and was later hired by the firm.

Quickly rising to become Reynolds’ top aide, she maintained that role throughout Trump’s administration while also holding the positions of Special Assistant to the President and Director for Legislative Affairs. Her desk was located next to Meadows’ in an office just a few steps from the Oval Office. Trump had planned for Hutchinson to work for his post-presidency organization in Florida after his term as president ended.

What happened prior to January 6th?

During her sworn testimony on June 28, Hutchinson revealed that she had overheard discussions about the Oath Keepers and Proud Boys while Trump’s personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani was present and the Save America March was being planned. Leaders of both groups were later charged with seditious conspiracy for their alleged involvement in the January 6 attack on the US Capitol. Hutchinson further testified that both Meadows and Giuliani had requested presidential pardons and that politicians Matt Gaetz, Andy Biggs, Scott Perry, and Louie Gohmert had also made requests for pardons, as she had previously informed the committee.

The Event On January 6

During her sworn testimony on June 28, Hutchinson revealed that Trump and Meadows were informed that some attendees at the January 6 events were carrying weapons, including guns, and were unable to pass through magnetometers to access the rally. Despite this, Trump attempted to have the magnetometers removed and stated that he didn’t care if his followers carried guns, claiming that they “were not coming to hurt him.”

Hutchinson informed the committee that police warning radio broadcasts were heard about individuals carrying weapons, including AR-15s. She also testified that Tony Ornato, the then-White House deputy chief of staff, informed her that when Trump attempted to drive to the Capitol in his presidential SUV after his rally, his lead Secret Service agent, Robert Engel, told him it was too dangerous and that they were returning to the White House.

Ornato told Hutchinson that Trump became enraged, attempted to grab the car’s steering wheel, and rushed at Engel’s clavicles. Hutchinson stated that Engel was present when Ornato recounted the incident, and he did not dispute Ornato’s statement. In addition, CNN reported three days after Hutchinson’s testimony that it had spoken to two Secret Service personnel who had heard accounts of the event from several other personnel, including Trump’s driver, since February 2021.

Trump Claimed to hardly know Cassidy Hutchinson

During Hutchinson’s live testimony on Tuesday, Trump claimed that he hardly knows her, a tactic he often employs with aides and allies who have turned against him. He also stated that he rejected her request to join his post-presidency staff at Mar-a-Lago. Trump tried to portray Hutchinson’s testimony as an act of revenge, saying she was upset because he did not want her at his Palm Beach residence. However, the committee presented images of the West Wing to illustrate Hutchinson’s proximity to the Oval Office as Meadows’ assistant.

Former White House aides vouched for Hutchinson’s access to Trump and his chief of staff, and one even mentioned that Trump may not have known her name but definitely recognized her since she traveled with Meadows on Air Force One. One former White House aide stated that Tuesday’s testimony was crazy but believable, particularly the alleged incident of Trump trying to take control of the presidential limousine’s steering wheel to be driven to the Capitol on January 6.
