Jerome John Garcia (August 1, 1942 – August 9, 1995) was an American musician, lead guitarist and vocalist of the Grateful Dead, which he co-founded during the 1960s counterculture. Though reluctant, Garcia was seen as the band’s leader. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994, he performed with the band for 30 years.
Garcia also formed projects like Saunders–Garcia Band, Jerry Garcia Band, Old & In the Way, Garcia/Grisman, Garcia/Kahn, Legion of Mary, and New Riders of the Purple Sage. Rolling Stone ranked him among the greatest guitarists.

After the car broke down, Garcia stayed with friends and met Dave McQueen, who introduced him to local musicians and the Chateau near Stanford University.

Garcia met his first wife, Sara Ruppenthal, in 1963; they married April 23 and had daughter Heather on December 8. They divorced in 1967.
Carolyn Adams (“Mountain Girl”), a Merry Prankster, moved in with Garcia in late 1966 with her daughter Sunshine. Adams and Garcia had daughters Annabelle Walker Garcia (1970) and Theresa Adams “Trixie” Garcia (1974). In August 1970, Garcia’s mother Ruth was in a car crash near Twin Peaks, San Francisco, and died September 28, 1970.
